Walter Trampler


Walter Trampler (August 25, 1915 – September 27, 1997) was a virtuoso performer and teacher of the viola and viola d'amore. He was born in Munich and began to study music at the age of 6, learning from his father, a violinist. In his youth, he toured Europe performing as the violist of the Strub String Quartet. Later, he served as the principal violist in the Berlin Radio Orchestra. He came to the United States in 1939, served in the United States Army during World War II, and then returned to a life of music teaching, performing, and recording. He was a founding member of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
